Toughest Horse
Mololla Buckaroo, OR, 2003
Daryl was competing with Pat Vargas and Keith Allen. The horse came out of the shoot hard and headed for the opposite side of the arena. As Daryl made his move for the mug, the animal threw a rear left kick on the run. The horse narrowly missed Daryl as spun sideways to avoid the rapidly approaching hoof. The kick was so close it actually ripped a button off his shirt. Daryl took his shot before the animal could reload. The steed's strength made it so that Daryl could only make the withers. Pat could not set the horse for Daryl because he had already been pulled off his feet and was dragging. At this point Daryl felt panic, he explained, "Once I made the withers I just clung to them. I couldn't move up and I wasn't going to let go. It was the only time in my entire career as a mugger that I held on to a horse out of fear for my life. I knew that if I let go he would do a mexican hat danceon my head. I wasn't sure how to get out safe." Fortunately for Daryl, the animal tired, Pat was able to gain his feet and set the horse enough to give Daryl the V he needed. He mugged the exhausted animal while Keith came in to saddle. Although the run seemed like it would never end, the team was fortunate enough to cross for a second place to reward their fortitude. A dazed Daryl stated after the go, "That is the type of animal that can make a man decide it is time to retire. I was fortunate to be able to walk out under my own strength."
